What do I do if I receive a Notice of Violation?

Drivers who receive photo red light tickets have all of the same rights that come with any traffic violation. You may pay the fine, which means you are not contesting the violation, or you may come to court. Failure to respond to the ticket by the date on the Notice of Violation, either by paying the fine or appearing in court, can result in additional fees and penalties. Online, drop-off, mail or telephone responses are encouraged (866-790-4111). You may also come to the court and speak with a court clerk.

What Payment Options Do I Have?

Please note that you must pay by the response date in your Notice of Violation or Summons and Complaint, using one of the following methods:

Pay online: You may pay online using a MasterCard/Visa.

Pay by telephone: You may pay by telephone (866-790-4111) using a MasterCard/Visa.

Pay by mail: You may pay by mail by following the instructions on your Notice of Violation. The court accepts payment via personal check, Money Order, Cashier's Check, or MasterCard/Visa. If you are paying by check or money order, make it payable to the City of Boulder and be sure to reference the notice number located on the top right side of the payment stub. Please do not send cash through the mail. Payments should be sent to:

Drop-off Payments: Payment may be dropped off in the drop box located across the street from the Boulder County Justice Center, 1777 6th St. (6th Street and Canyon Boulevard), at the entrance to the parking lot. Acceptable forms of payment are personal check Money Order, Cashier's Check, or MasterCard /Visa. If you are paying by check or money order, make it payable to the City of Boulder and be sure to reference the notice number located on the top right side of the payment stub. Please do not pay by cash.

Pay in person: You may pay in person at the Boulder Municipal Court, located on the southeast corner of the first floor in the Boulder County Justice Center, 1777 6th St. (6th Street and Canyon Boulevard), in Boulder. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (except that we are closed the second Friday of every month from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.). Major credit cards Visa or MasterCard are welcome, as are personal checks, cashier's checks or money orders. Cash is also accepted for walk-in payments only.

What are the fines and costs for a photo red light violation?

The fine for a Photo Red Light violation is $75. If personal service of a Penalty Assessment Notice is required due to lack of response from the registered owner of the vehicle, an additional $60 fee, covering the actual cost of service, is added. Non-payment after a Notice has been personally served will result in referral to a collection agency and will increase the amount owed by an additional 25 percent. Failure to appear for court is also a separate violation that may result in the issuance of a warrant for your arrest.

How do I know if you received my payment?

If you did not pay in person, you are welcome to call our office to confirm receipt of your payment. Please allow at least five days from the date it is paid. (866-790-4111).

What if I want to contest my citation?

Before deciding to contest your citation at a court trial (photo enforcement violations are not eligible for a jury trial), you are encouraged to review this website in detail, particularly the sections on Proof Issues (ownership, identity and other), How Red Light Cameras Work, and Defenses. Many of the reasons people choose to contest their tickets are not a valid basis for a Not Guilty finding.

To contest your citation, you must fill out and sign the Waiver of Service and Request for Setting form. Once you return the form to the court you will be given a date to appear in the future, called an arraignment date. At that court date you will be advised of your rights and have the opportunity to speak with the prosecutor. If you choose to have a trial, a subsequent trial date will be set. There are three ways to complete and return the form:

You can come to the Municipal Court at 6th and Canyon and complete the form. You will be given your future arraignment date at that time.

You can set your court date by fax. Download the Waiver of Service and Request for Setting and then fax the form and a copy of your citation to the Court at 303-441-1811. By signing this form, you are agreeing to waive personal service of the summons and complaint and promising to appear at the arraignment date that the court sets for your case. The court will fax or mail you notice of your arraignment date.

If you fail to appear for your arraignment date, you will be found guilty by default, assessed applicable fines and fees, and your case will be referred to a collection agency, which increases the amount due by 25 percent.
