Many of the cases that our detectives have cleared never would have been solved if it weren't for the help of our community members. The best way you can help police solve crime in Boulder is to call when something or someone strikes you as suspicious.
Here are some guidelines for how to be an effective witness:
- Never hesitate to call dispatch if you see something that seems out of place or suspicious to you. Call 303-441-3333 if the situation is not an emergency. Call 911 any time you need an urgent police, fire or medical response.
- Remember, be a good witness from a safe place. Your own safety is paramount.
- To describe a suspect, start from the top of his or her body and move to the bottom (hat, hair, eyes, race, facial hair, clothing, etc.)
- If the suspect is in a car, try to identify the make, model and color of the vehicle. Is it a two-door or a four-door, a hatchback, an SUV, etc? A license plate (state/number) can be extremely helpful.
- What did the person do and why was it suspicious?
- What time and where did the incident occur?
- Was there anything unusual about the suspect? For example, did he/she have a distinctive voice or walk with an unusual gait?
- Jot down notes that can help refresh your memory if you need to be interviewed later by officers or detectives. If you are in a safe location and have the ability to take a photo or video, do so.
