Landmarks Board (LB) Projects

Boulder Survey of Historic Places:  Potential Landmarks and Districts

Since 1977, the LB has sponsored historical surveys of the community to determine the location of individually significant resources and eligible historic districts. The surveys help the LB identify structures that may be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and areas of the city that are eligible for local historic district designation and National Register Historic District listing.

Historical surveys conducted by the City of Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks Department and Parks and Recreation Department have also begun to identify historic resources, archaeological sites, and significant features of the landscape, such as ditches on city-owned properties in the city and in the county.

Future Programs

The LB will continue to integrate historic preservation goals with the goals of the Boulder Valley Comprehensive Plan. Among the highest-priority efforts, the LB has identified the following focuses for the coming years:

  • work with property owners, residents, and historic preservation organizations to pursue landmark designation for eligible sites and districts;
  • continue the Boulder Survey of Historic Places;
  • update existing surveys to include the contributing-restorable category for buildings that are capable of being restored and contributing to the character of the district;
  • continue and expand historic preservation education and outreach with the public; and
  • develop a framework for designation and protection of archaeological resources and landscape features such as ditches.
