What Is Discrimination in Employment?

The City of Boulder’s Human Rights Ordinance protects against discrimination in Employment based on membership in a protected class. Violations of the ordinance include considering protected classes in employment policies and practices such as:

  • Job advertisements
  • Hiring processes (Application, Interview, Selection)
  • Pay rates and Benefits allocations
  • Promotion, Demotion, Layoffs
  • Termination, Firing

This local law applies to businesses and employers within the Boulder city limits, including:

  • Employment Agencies
  • Labor Organizations
  • Non-profit Organizations
  • On-the-job training and vocational training programs and schools

Religious organizations are exempted when there is a bona fide religious purpose for an employment restriction.

The deadline for filing a complaint of discrimination in Employment is within 180 calendar days of the alleged violation.

Saturday, Sept. 29:
Recognition of Boulder’s Immigrant Heritage, 11 a.m. at the Boulder Farmers Market, 13th Street between Arapahoe Street and Canyon Boulevard.

Monday, Oct. 1:
Free dinner followed by a screening of  “The Least of These,”  a film that considers how core American rights and values should apply to immigrants, particularly children, 6 p.m.  A discussion of immigrant rights policy follows.  YWCA of Boulder County, 2222 14th St. Boulder.

Oct. 1 – 7:
“Celebrating Diverse Cultures in Boulder Through Music and Dance,” performances Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings at 7:30; Daytime performances Saturday and Sunday, Pearl Street Studio, 2126 Pearl St.  View complete performance schedule pdf.

Exploring Latina Heritage and Immigration Policy at the Boulder Public Library, 1001 Arapahoe Ave.

Wednesday, Oct. 3:
“Los Immigrantes” interviews recorded over 29 years ago with some of the first Latino families in Boulder, 6 – 8:30 p.m. Boulder Public Library.

Through October 28:
“Boulder’s Latino History Project 1910-1955” photo exhibit, Boulder Public Library.
