Andrews Arboretum
Managed by the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry Section
A unique Boulder resource, Andrews Arboretum was established in 1948 by Maud Reed, a former botany teacher at Boulder High School.
Miss Reed used the open land as an outdoor classroom for several years and persuaded the school district to purchase it shortly before her retirement. At her request, the aboretum was named after Darwin M. Andrews, an internationally recognized horticulturist from Boulder. The aboretum was acquired by the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department in 1989 and is managed by the Urban Forestry Section.
Today, the Andrews Arboretum provides a peaceful haven of green in the heart of the city. Thoughtfully crafted combinations of plants surround the visitor: native evergreens, cultivated shrubs, groundcovers, exotic trees and more. A stroll down the arboretum’s central path provides a diverse display of plant life and a relaxing lunch at one of the quiet seating areas is a welcome reprieve during the workday.
The most important function of the arboretum is to serve as a place where trees and plants are grown and exhibited for scientific and educational purposes. Dedicated to that purpose, the City of Boulder is committed to continued renovation and maintenance of the Andrews Arboretum.
Future plans include updating the arboretum brochure, increasing the number of interpretive identification labels that currently exist on trees and plants, additional plantings, landscaping, and path renovation and design. Individuals or organizations interested in joining us in this endeavor are invited to participate with contributions of money, talent or time.
The Andrews Arboretum is located on the east side of Broadway between Grandview and Marine Streets in Boulder. It is open everyday free of charge.
