Youth Opportunities ProgramThe Youth Opportunities Program is a leadership and grant-making program for city youth. Its purpose is to make Boulder a better community for people of middle school or high school age by helping them access cultural, educational and recreational activities. The Program is advised by the Youth Opportunities Advisory Board (YOAB), a group of high school students. The 2011-2012 YOAB has 16 members who attend five different schools. Board meetings are held the first Friday of each month during the school year. New members join the Board each spring through an application process.
GRANTS: The Youth Opportunities Program is funded through a city sales tax. The Program offers financial support for cultural, recreational, and educational activities for City of Boulder resident middle and high school age youth through grants to individual youth and to agencies. VIDEO: STUDENT VOICES ON BVSD ACHIEVEMENT GAP Introduction from Nancy Contreras, Neal Kornreich and Peter Osnes: This year our YOAB subcommittee decided to create a video focusing on student voices regarding the Achievement Gap. The Boulder Valley has one of the biggest achievement gaps in the state, and Colorado has one of the biggest in the nation. We felt this is a big issue to address in the city to help all kids get the same benefit out of the school system. We believe that students have experience with how they learn best, so we thought that if teachers could hear from students about what works, that could help them teach best. We created a video focused toward teachers, but we hope that principals, parents, and students will also get something out of watching it.
