Does my kayak need a boat permit?

Yes. All watercraft including canoes, kayaks, wind- and kite-surfers will require a boat permit to launch on the Boulder Reservoir. Season use permits for human- and wind-powered watercraft are available the boat house for $10 per craft. The reason for this new requirement is to allow better communication with all boaters around special events, water safety and aquatic nuisance species issues.

Because of state-wide concerns of transporting harmful plant and animal species from one body of water to another, we ask that you clean your vessel thoroughly and let it dry for at least ten days before bringing it to the Boulder Reservoir. Additionally, we ask that you read the aquatic invasive species information we have and follow the precautions to protect our reservoir from long-term water quality and ecological damage.

Is alcohol allowed at the reservoir?

Yes, alcohol is allowed at the reservoir as long as it is not in a glass container. All local and state laws apply. NO GLASS ALLOWED. In some cases, a permit may be required for alcohol, depending on party size and types of alcohol. See alcohol policy

Why can't I bring my dog to the reservoir?

Dog are only allowed during the off-season on the south shore from Labor Day to May 15. Dogs are allowed outside the south shore area on established trails and roads year round, but leash laws do apply. The potential for conflicts during the busy season on the south shore makes dog management difficult, and thus is not allowed. As always, guardians are responsible for picking up after dogs.

Can I swim when the beach is closed?

No. The only swimming that is allowed at the Boulder Reservoir is at the designated swim beach when lifeguards are on duty. We now offer open-water swims on Wednesday mornings at 7a.m. The cost is only $10. More swimming information

Is it free for seniors (65 and up) to come to the reservoir?

No. The entrance fee for seniors is $4 per visit. However, there is an opportunity to receive unlimited access to the reservoir and outdoor pools for the summer. Splash Passes can be earned by volunteering at the reservoir for 10 hours. Types of volunteer activities include, but are not limited to handing out surveys, gardening, cleaning, parking, etc. Please contact Sarah Rodriguez at 303-441-1806.

What is the water temperature?

The water temperature varies quite a bit with the weather. Staff will check the temperature in the morning and record on the outgoing phone message weekly. Please call 303-441-3461 and listen to the message.

Do you have a concession stand?

Yes! It's at the main building. We are excited to finish the remodel of the concession stand and welcome Dave Tobin, owner of the Dark Horse Saloon to the Reservoir. Please call ahead to see if concessions has opened for the season.

We also have snacks and drinks for sale at the boat house.

What is the policy on lightning?

The swim beach will be cleared and all rental boats will be brought to shore in the event of lightning or thunder. The beach and rental operations will remain closed until 30 minutes after the last lightning is detected (seen or heard).

Additionally, lake patrol will put up the storm warning flag (a red triangle) at the boathouse. During these times, reservoir staff recommends all boats return to shore and wait out the storm, as Lake Patrol staff will be coming off the water, and patrons will be boating at their own risk.
