Children's (& Parent's) Programs

 Preschools and Day Care Centers
Our preschool education focus is the message that “Firefighters Are Our Friends.” This lesson is designed to ease fears and empower children to call 911 or call out to their rescuers (their “friends”) to come get them (rather than hiding from the stranger in the mask.)

Please note:  Boulder Fire-Rescue does not host birthday parties. Educational station tours for children over the age of 5 may be scheduled by parents or teachers for groups of children.

Elementary Schools
Firefighters teaching in the classroom have received a great deal of praise from teachers, families, and administrators. Since 1998, we have designed and implemented a progressive fire safety curriculum for each grade from kindergarten through third grades.

Boulder classroom teachers actively support our fire safety education program. They send the fire safety assignments home for their students and parents to complete as a family. They make time to welcome the firefighters into their classrooms to teach important follow up lessons.

We work together to keep the children in the community safe from fire. The program has grown significantly from its start, with 1,920 students taught in 1999 to 5,628 students taught in 2001, a nearly 300 percent increase in just three years.

Station Tours
Station tours emphasize the same "Firefighters Are Our Friends" theme by explaining the work and environment that is home to firefighters and their equipment. This relationship building is an important aspect of neighborhood livability. Our belief is that a strong friendship with “my fire station” and “my firefighters” makes a child less likely to play with fire.
