Oct. 12, 2007 - Discounted energy efficient light bulbs available during OctoberContact(s):Beth Powell, Office of Environmental Affairs, (303) 441-1846 Jodie Carroll, Media Relations, (303) 441-3155 www.bouldercolorado.gov/
The City of Boulder's Office of Environmental Affairs (OEA), through the ClimateSmart initiative, is offering discounts on energy efficient light bulbs at local hardware stores in Boulder throughout October (or until supplies are depleted). The discounts are $1.50 off single bulbs, $1 off per bulb in a multi-pack, and $2 off specialty bulbs. These ENERGY
Funds for the program sponsorship come from the city's Climate Action Plan (CAP) tax, which supports ClimateSmart programs designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the City of Boulder. The promotion was planned to coincide with ENERGY STARTM's October Energy Awareness Month campaign. The national campaign, which runs through October, challenges Americans to switch to lighting products that have earned the ENERGY STARTM label, in order to save energy, money and to protect the environment. "Switching to CFLs is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to save energy," said Beth Powell, OEA. "We hope residents will take advantage of this and other ClimateSmart incentives as a way to do their part in reducing Boulder's greenhouse gas emissions." If every household in Boulder replaced their five most frequently used incandescent light bulbs with ENERGY STAR TM CFLs, Boulder would save more than $1 million annually in electricity costs, and 114 million kilowatt hours of energy. It would also prevent over 231 million pounds of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere. This is the greenhouse gas equivalent of keeping 22,800 cars off the road each year. ENERGY STARTM qualified fixtures and bulbs last six to ten times longer than standard models, and operate on two-thirds less energy. In addition, lighting products that have earned the ENERGY STAR generate about 70 percent less heat than standard incandescent lighting, which means they're cool to the touch and can help reduce energy costs associated with cooling the home. ClimateSmart programs promote energy efficiency, alternative transportation options, and renewable energy to households and businesses throughout Boulder County.
