Sister City Plaza

The City of Boulder, Colorado and the Boulder Sister City Alliance collaborated on the development of a Sister City Plaza in downtown Boulder.  Located on the east lawn of the Municipal Building, the plaza is dedicated to honoring Boulder's Sister City relationships. Beginning more than twenty years, the community of Boulder has fostered seven Sister City relationships, including: Dushanbe, Tajikistan; Jalapa, Nicaragua; Kisumu, Kenya; Lhasa, Tibet; Mante, Mexico; Yamagata, Japan and Yateras, Cuba.  These relationships have centered on health care, education, economics and a variety of other humanitarian services.

The Sister City Plaza features artistic, stone and metal inlay squares honoring each of Boulder's Sister Cities. The squares represent unique geographic and economic features exclusive to each region.  The plaza design also includes seating areas, entry columns, lighting and low-water landscaping and an herb garden with plants common to those areas.  In addition, a delegation from Yamagata, Japan came to Boulder in April of 2007 and gifted 50 cherry trees to the City, several of which are planted in the plaza area.

The City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department is proud to be a part of a state-wide Plant Select® Program with the addition of our Sister City Plant Select® Garden at the plaza.  This garden was planted in the spring of 2007 and will grow and change through the years as new Plant Select® Plants are added! Landscaping Plant Select® is a cooperative program administered by Denver Botanic Gardens and Colorado State University in concert with horticulturists and nurseries throughout the Rocky Mountain region and beyond. The purpose of Plant Select® is to seek out, identify and distribute the very best plants for landscapes and gardens from the intermountain region to the high plains of Colorado.

The Sister City Plaza project began in September 2006 and was completed in May 2007 at an estimated construction cost of $325,000. A special dedication event was held on May 17, along with an evening of fundraising events for Boulder's Sister Cities.  Boulder's former Mayor Mark Ruzzin declared May 13 - 19, 2007 as Boulder Sister City Week.

The Boulder Sister City Alliance The Boulder Sister City Alliance is composed of one member from each sister city committee.   The City of Boulder has seven official sister city relationships, authorized by the Boulder City Council under Council Resolution No. 631.
