GO Ambassadors

Volunteer Description

GO Boulder/City of Boulder seeks volunteers to serve as our GO (Great Options) Ambassadors for the "Courtesy is Contagious" safety education and public outreach campaign.

Working solo or in conjunction, you will develop and set up displays at scheduled public events and high traffic pedestrian and bicycle spot locations. The aim will be to distribute information and invite the public to discuss the safety and responsiblity aspects of bicycling and walking.

GO Ambassadors will receive a visor or baseball cap and an official GO Ambassador t-shirt. You will also be equipped with a city bicycle and burley trailer, portable chair, table, presentation board, informational brochures and incentive give-a-ways.

You will be responsible for working with the general public to educate bicycle riders, motorists, pedestrians and non-cyclists on all aspects of safe and responsible road and path use. You will receive materials and hands on training to assist you with relevant aspects of the Boulder Revised Code and Colorado Bicycle Manual, bicycle handling and helmet safety techniques, and effective communication skills. Candidates must successfully complete an on-road bicycle test.

Time Commitment

Seasonal, part-time
June – September
Approx. 5 - 15 hours per week, including some weekends and evenings outdoors

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Describe how to bicycle safely in traffic and on paths
  • Educate motorists on how to drive safely alongside bicyclists in traffic
  • Distribute bicycle and pedestrian safety information at scheduled events
  • Bicycle to, from, and at events and presentations
  • Write reports evaluating presentations given and events attended
  • Market the program to event organizers and schedule and organize event participation
  • Ride a bicycle and wear an approved helmet

Qualifications

Candidates must possess good written and verbal communication skills, problem solving, creative thinking, and an ability to work with limited supervision, engage persons of all ages and speak with strangers; demonstrate safe bicycle handling skills at events, work well in a team and foster team spirit; be willing and able to work outdoors all day and in any weather, be proficient in MS Office applications.

Fluency in Spanish is a bonus, as well as experience teaching bicycle safety.
