Parks & Recreation - In loving memory of Matthew SawyerIn loving memory
Matthew SawyerDecember 9, 1972 - March 2, 2009 The City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department lost a dear friend and beloved co-worker when Matthew Sawyer passed away on March 2, 2009. On June 23, 2009, the city held a public ceremony to dedicate a new bike rack located at the North Boulder Recreation Center in Matthew's honor. Matthew moved from New England to Boulder 18 years ago to attend the University of Colorado. He fell in love with the area and its residents - and never left. Matthew especially enjoyed exploring the region's mountain trails on foot and by bike - often sharing his adventures with colleagues and friends. He was hired by the city in August 2005 and loved serving the community through his work at the North Boulder Recreation Center. Matthew intentionally did not own a car. Instead, he was an avid cyclist and tireless champion of alternative transportation. A proud ambassador of Bike to Work Day in previous years, Matthew received the 2009 Honorary Commuter of the Year Award from the city's Go Boulder program. Matthew's life reflected a favorite phrase, "Choose Kindness." We honor Matthew's life by incorporating that simple phrase into the bike rack dedicated to his memory.
