Who Participates

When you wake up on Wednesday, Jan. 20, and peep out your window you will find out if it is cCasey_Middle_School_Bike_Club_2old and snowy or a beautiful sunny day. In either case it is the perfect day for a bike commute to work. If you think your commute seems just a little too long or you don't want to commute by bike both ways, consider putting your bike on the bus for part of your trip. Last year nearly 800 commuters biked in for Winter Bike to Work Day, this year organizers are hoping for 1000 happy and hardy cyclists like you.

The GO Boulder Web site is full of information to assist with your commute. You will find bike and transit maps as well as GOBikeBoulder.net. GOBikeBoulder.net will help you to create a customized bike route and let you know how far you will ride and how many calories you will burn.

How the City Ensures that Your Ride is Safe and Easy

One thing you canBear_Creek_Underpass_in_winter_Alfred_Sawatzky_ be sure of, your commute will be safe and convenient because even if it has snowed the City of Boulder keeps its 60 miles of paved multi-use pathways and 76 underpasses plowed so that cyclists can easily use them even during severe snowstorms. The city begins plowing as soon as an inch of snow accumulates and at exactly the same time that crews are plowing the streets! In fact many cyclists report that biking is faster than driving, especially in slow winter traffic!

Boulder Creek and Broadway paths are plowed first, followed by the Foothills Parkway path and other Greenway paths. The Boulder Creek Path is cleared by the Parks Department, while the Broadway path, from Baseline Road to University Avenue, is cleared by CU-Boulder facilities maintenance. All other multi-use paths are maintained by City of Boulder Street and Bikeway Transportation Maintenance (or the adjacent property owner). On-street bike lanes are cleared during street snow removal operations.
