Energy Conservation and Efficiency Makes Cents!

The City of Boulder and its partners offer a variety of commercial energy efficiency programs, services, and financial incentives for your business and/or commercial property. These offerings are a part of the community's commitment to climate action and are funded by the Climate Action Plan (CAP) tax. The following programs, services and financial incentives can save you money and energy.

Programs and Services

EnergySmart - A collaboration of the City of Boulder, Boulder County and Longmont, EnergySmart services connect you with efficiency solutions for your business. You'll receive guidance from a personal EnergySmart Advisor, who will:

• provide a FREE EnergySmart savings review;
• help you optimize or upgrade equipment, improving efficiency and reducing operational costs; 
• provide professional assistance regarding rebates, incentives and tax credits; and
• help you find a certified contractor to carry out any additional upgrades.

10 for Change - A free voluntary program, funded by the city's CAP tax,that engages Boulder businesses in a friendly challenge to save money by integrating sustainability best practices into their operations. Efforts to save energy and water, reduce waste, and travel wisely all contribute to Boulder's community sustainability goals.

PACE - Partners for a Clean Environment (PACE) is a free program in Boulder County that provides local businesses with technical assistance to improve their energy efficiency, zero waste management, and water conservation. PACE is a partnership of local governments committed to creating a business community with environmentally sustainable practices. 

Commercial Buildings Energy Rating & Reporting Program - The primary focus of this program is to understand how efficiently Boulder's commercial buildings and businesses use energy. The first step is to encourage building owners to rate whole buildings' energy use with the Environmental Protection Agency's free, online ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager™ software. In order to better understand the process and usefulness of rating energy use with Portfolio Manager, the city implemented a Commercial Buildings Energy Rating and Reporting Pilot Program.

Renewable Energy Information - Renewable energy is produced from sources that are environmentally sustainable. There are several ways you can invest in renewable energy, from purchasing wind power for your business to an on-site generating system, such as solar panels that produce energy or hot water.

Commercial Energy Efficiency Requirements - Boulder has above-code energy efficiency requirements.

Financial Incentives

Solar Rebate and Grant Programs - Boulder businesses that have installed solar electric or solar thermal (hot water) systems on their property may be eligible for a sales and use tax rebate. The city may rebate approximately 15 percent of the city sales and use tax paid on materials and permits for the solar installation. To be eligible, taxpayers must file a rebate application within 12 months of the city's final inspection.

Elevations Energy Loans - Energy Smart and Elevations Credit Union are working together to offer a wide range of low-interest loans for a variety of energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrades.

Xcel Energy can help you reduce your energy use, maximize efficiencies, and minimize your costs by providing a wide variety of energy efficiency, expertise, and rebate programs.

Recommissioning - Recommissioning helps you find and solve mechanical system problems that make your facility expensive to operate. Recommissioning can help lower energy costs by an average of 10 percent.

Custom Efficiency - With Custom Efficiency, by ConservationWise from Xcel Energy SM , you can get money back for choosing energy-efficiency investments that exceed standard options, but aren't covered under our standard conservation programs.
