Green Building CommercialIn May 2002, City Council adopted the Kyoto Protocol, which entails a 7% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (namely carbon dioxide) from 1990 levels. To achieve this, the entire community must do its part to use energy wisely; we all can make a difference. How much energy can you save? We all have a role to play in conserving energy and keeping Boulder beautiful for future generations. The City of Boulder government organization is helping by continuously upgrading city facilities, including reaching for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification for new buildings and large remodels and additions, such as the North Boulder Recreation Center. The city supports the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED programs that assist in achieving a higher theshold of sustainable design and construction. In 2005, the City of Boulder hired consultants to evaluate Boulder's commercial development codes, standards and regulations compared to a LEED-NC (New Construction) standard.
