The average Boulder household emits about 16 tons of greenhouse gases (GHGs) every year. These emissions come from burning gasoline for transportation and using natural gas and electricity (which comes primarily from coal) in our houses.

  • Do you emit a lot or a little?
  • Is your house high performing and energy efficient or are there opportunities for improving the energy efficiency?
  • Is your vehicle an efficient means of transportation, or are there alternative means of transportation that could work for you?

The best way to assess your options for reducing carbon emissions is to first know what they are. The City of Boulder, as part of our ClimateSmart campaign, has partnered with Zerofootprint to develop a calculator to determine your carbon footprint.  Utilizing information regarding the natural gas and electricity use in your home and your method of transportation, Zerofootprint will create a "footprint" for you.  You wil then be able to compare your footprint to others in the community, state, and even world.
