Greenhouse gas inventory

The City of Boulder maintains an inventory of Boulder’s greenhouse gas emissions and updates it annually.  Boulder’s 2008 greenhouse gas data will be posted in fall 2009.

The inventory is based primarily on electricity and natural gas information provided by Xcel Energy and transportation data collected by the city's Transportation Department.  The inventory is adjusted to take into account Windsource subscriptions and carbon offset purchases and the quantity of solid waste collected from Boulder businesses and residents (when landfilled, solid waste emits the greenhouse gas methane).

 Doc1

To meet the 2012 climate action goal, we must reduce our current greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 23 percent.

The chart above shows the emissions by source of energy and indicates that the vast majority of Boulder's emissions are a result of electricity use, whose main fuel source is coal.
