Don't Top It Off

When you try to put a little more gasoline into your gas tank after the nozzle clicks off...you are "topping off" your tank.

Topping off spills gasoline and allows more vapors in your gas tank to escape into the air. Evaporating vapors are hazardous to your health AND contribute to ozone pollution.

Each year, about 13 tons of hazardous vapors are released into Boulder's air and 265,000 gallons of gasoline are wasted because of "topping off."

Remember:

  • Stop filling your gas tank as soon as the nozzle clicks off.
  • Keep the nozzle tilted up so you don't drip gasoline on the ground.
