Section No. 7-6-9(c): Double Parked
"Double parking" refers to the illegal practice of parking a vehicle to the side of one or more vehicles that is already parked next to the curb. This often prevents the vehicle(s) parked next to the curb from departing, and always obstructs a traffic lane or bike lane.
If you received this ticket, your vehicle was double parked (see sample photos, below).

Parking in violation of this section creates a safety issue. Most streets are not wide enough to accommodate moving traffic as well as vehicles parked further than 12 feet from the curb.
On two-way streets, parked vehicles protruding into the lane for moving traffic can cause vehicles traveling in the traffic lane to move toward or into oncoming traffic. This is an obvious safety hazard.
On one-way streets, parked vehicles that are more than 12 feet from the curb may prevent moving traffic from traveling on the roadway, particularly if the moving vehicle is large.
