Demolitions

We wish to preserve buildings that are important to the community. If anyone wants to demolish a building that is over 50 years old, they will need to submit the Demolition Permit Application to the Design Review Committee for review.

Demolition of buildings on landmark sites or within historic districts requires a Landmark Alteration Certificate.

How We Define Demolition

For the purposes of reviewing applications, "demolition" means an act or process that removes:

  • 50 percent or more of the exterior walls of a building as measured contiguously around the “building coverage;” or
  • 50 percent or more of the roof areas as measured in plan view; or
  • any exterior wall facing a public street, but not an act or process which removes an exterior wall facing an alley.

Initial Fees

  • Around $282 for primary buildings built before or during 1939
  • Around $51 for buildings built on or after 1990 for all accessory buildings
  • An additional fee of approximately $1,500 is required when a Landmarks Board public hearing review is needed. Most applications do not require a public hearing.

Check the fees list for more details.
