Mission Statement:
The Boulder Fire Department strives to make Boulder a safe place to live and work. We reduce the human suffering caused by fires, accidents, sudden illnesses, hazardous material releases, or other disasters.
General Information:
In 1871, Boulder's first fire department consisted of city leaders and "every person" available to protect the population of 343 and their 77 dwellings.
Today, Boulder Fire - Rescue has a staff of 112, seven fire stations, and a budget of approximately $13 million to provide fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical care, fire prevention services and public education to a population of over 103,000 that live within the 24 square miles of Boulder city limits.
Today, Boulder's firefighters do a lot more than fight fires. Every firefighter is a state certified emergency medical technician. Every engine crew is equipped with and trained to operate a cardiac defibrillator.
Our firefighters are prepared to:
- Deal with flooding in a business or house
- Extricate someone from a vehicle accident
- Rescue people from a stalled elevator or a collapsed trench
- Effectively deal with carbon monoxide alarms or tree branches on power lines.
Many of Boulder's firefighters have advanced training in dive rescue, hazardous material spills, wildland fire fighting, or fire safety education.
Boulder's firefighters also provide proactive services for the safety and well being of the public. The engine crews and fire safety division inspect Boulder businesses to ensure they comply with the International Fire Code and Boulder Revised Code. Through the school system, the fire safety education team reaches virtually every elementary student in the city during October which is Fire Prevention Month. College students are taught fire safety through the Greek and R.A. Fire Academies.
The Boulder Fire-Rescue Department has a division dedicated to fire prevention. This area not only promotes fire safety and education, but also investigates fire, performs plan reviews for new or remodeled buildings, and performs building inspections to ensure compliance with the fire code.
The department also has a training division that concentrates on recruit training, continuing education to the entire department, and EMS training.
