Solar Grant Program seeking applications from Boulder-based nonprofits and affordable housing owners

The City of Boulder’s Solar Grant Program is seeking applications for the first funding cycle of 2012. The Solar Grant Program—formerly known as ClimateSmart Solar Grants—provides financial assistance toward the installation of photovoltaic (PV) or solar thermal systems on:

  • Housing included in the city’s permanently affordable housing program;
  • Lower-income housing developed and/or owned by nonprofit organizations; and
  • Facilities of nonprofit organizations located in Boulder.

More than $100,000 is available for solar grants, and applications must be received electronically or by mail by 5 p.m. on Monday, April 2, 2012 (electronic submissions are preferred). For applications and program information, visit the city’s Solar Rebate and Solar Grant Programs website at www.bouldercolorado.gov/lead/solargrant.

The Solar Grant Program is funded by revenue generated through sales and use taxes from the purchase and installation of solar technologies. Some of the taxes are used to provide a tax rebate and others are allocated to the Solar Grant Program.

Since the first grant cycle in March 2008, more than $270,000 has been awarded to nonprofit organizations and homeowners. The grant funds have contributed to the installation of approximately 435 kilowatts of PV and two solar thermal systems, saving recipients more than $50,000 annually and preventing about 445 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from being emitted per year.*

The City of Boulder Climate Action programs promote energy efficiency, renewable energy, and alternative transportation options to Boulder residents and businesses.
