2012 Safe Streets Boulder Report
The Safe Streets Boulder report is based on a study of the motor vehicle collisions that involved bicyclists or pedestrians during a 40-month period, from January 2008 through April 2011.
The report identifies the most common types of collisions in Boulder, discusses the behaviors that caused them, and pinpoints the locations where collisions most frequently occur. Safe Streets Boulder also outlines an integrated approach to collision reduction strategies, including crosswalk safety.
Of more than 8,500 motor vehicle collisions that occurred in Boulder during the 40-month study period, crosswalks are the most common locations for collisions involving bicyclists or pedestrians and motor vehicles.

Countermeasures for High-Collision Locations
- 1.8 percent involved pedestrians (151 collisions);
- 6 percent involved cyclists (516 collisions); and
- 0.2 percent involved skateboarders (14 collisions).
- Crosswalks at intersections are the most common collision location for both bike/vehicle collisions (39 percent) and pedestrian/vehicle collisions (36 percent).
- Only 6 percent of all collisions involving a bicyclist or pedestrian (and a motor vehicle) occurred at flashing crosswalks.
- Pedestrian collisions occur most often in the afternoon, between 2 and 6 p.m.
- Bicycle collisions also occur more often in the afternoon, but are more evenly distributed across the day between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
- A turning motor vehicle is the most common action involving a bicyclist or pedestrian.
25 percent of pedestrian/car collisions involved a vehicle turning into an intersection and a pedestrian in the crosswalk.
13.6 percent where a motorist was turning right and a bicyclist riding in the same direction.
13.4 percent where a motorist was turning left and a bicyclist was traveling the opposite direction.
