Police investigating auto-pedestrian accident

Boulder police are investigating an accident that occurred at the corner of Folsom and Taft at 8:20 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23.

A 20-year-old University of Colorado student was walking on the sidewalk with a friend when a pickup truck allegedly jumped the curb and drove onto the sidewalk. The truck hit the female victim, Chloe Kay, and knocked her into her friend, who also fell but was not hit by the truck.

Kay was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.  She was not conscious when police arrived after passers-by called 9-1-1. Kay’s female friend, also a University of Colorado student, was not injured.

Because the driver of the truck is a 17-year-old juvenile, police are not releasing his name or the names of the three juvenile passengers who were in the truck.

The driver told police he was driving northbound on Folsom, looking for a parking space, when he says he unknowingly drove onto the sidewalk, colliding with Kay. He estimated that he was driving approximately 20 miles per hour at the time of the accident. The driver stayed at the scene of the accident and has been cooperating with police.

Investigators believe that drugs may have been a factor in the accident, and police are waiting for the results of a blood test given to the juvenile driver. The driver has not been arrested.

This is an open investigation and the Boulder Police Department will release more information as it becomes available. Witnesses were interviewed at the scene, but others who have information are encouraged to call Dispatch at 303-441-3333 and ask to speak to a traffic officer.

Those who have information but wish to remain anonymous may contact the Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or 1-800-444-3776. Tips can also be submitted through the Crime Stoppers website at www.crimeshurt.com. Those submitting tips through Crime Stoppers that lead to the arrest and filing of charges on a suspect(s) may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000 from Crime Stoppers.
