OSMP offering volunteer opportunities to help build trails

The City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) is hosting several volunteer trail building projects this year, one each month from May through August. The overall purpose of these projects is to work towards conservation and sustainable access to OSMP lands. Volunteers will help build new trail and trail re-routes listed below.

  1. Green Bear Trail Re-route, May 5. A portion of this re-route will move the Green Bear Trail out of Preble’s Meadow Jumping Mouse habitat. This federally listed species requires riparian shrub land habitat, like those found in Bear Canyon, for feeding, breeding and hibernation. This project is currently full. However you can be added to the wait list by emailing Kristin at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. 2. Homestead and Towhee Trails - National Trails Day, June 2. The popular Homestead and Towhee Trails are being re-routed to provide for a more sustainable trail design and alignment that will minimize impacts to plant and animal habitat on OSMP lands.
  3. Homestead Trail, July 14. See explanation above.
  4. Wittemyer/Sanitas Trail, Aug. 11. The new West Sanitas Trail will access the summit of Mt. Sanitas via the west side starting from Sunshine Canyon. A sustainable trail alignment will replace several social trails in the area in order to minimize impacts to natural resources. This new trail will leave a large area undisturbed in order to improve wildlife habitat.

To register for these events, go to the OSMP web page at www.osmp.org. On the ribbon to the right, click “Get Involved” and then “Volunteer.” Scroll down until you see project applications listed. In order to assure yourself of a spot, please register soon, as these events are filling fast.
