Boulder police investigating fatal construction accident

Boulder police are conducting an investigation at a construction site at Boulder Community Hospital, located at 4747 Arapahoe Ave., where a construction worker was killed this afternoon.

A witness told police that the male victim, an employee of Wyatt Construction Company of Boulder, was standing on a steel beam when it began to give way. The worker either jumped or fell to the ground, and the beam fell onto the worker, pinning him to the ground.

Two nurses at the hospital who witnessed the accident rushed to aid the worker and began rescue efforts until the Boulder Fire Department arrived and took over the rescue.

When firefighters arrived, they found two other workers nearby, who had also been injured. One of the men was conscious and breathing, but in pain. The other worker complained of a hand injury. Both were taken inside the hospital for treatment. Their conditions are not known at this time.

Names of those killed or injured are not being released at this time, while authorities attempt to reach their families.

During the rescue effort, construction workers attached the beam that fell onto their co-worker to a large crane, and lifted it enough so that Boulder firefighters could attempt to give aid. It was shortly afterward that the man was pronounced dead by a doctor at Boulder Community Hospital.

Representatives with Occupational Safety and Health Administration have been notified and will also conduct an investigation into the incident.

The work is part of an expansion project at Boulder Community Hospital.
