What you can do today:

Don't just hammer away.
Check out Green Building and Green Points: The Green Building and Green Points program encourages the use of sustainable remodeling and building methods and technologies to conserve energy, water and other natural resources. Builders and remodelers earn "points" towards their building permit by using sustainable practices.

Hire green builders.
Make sure your contractors have had green building training through the Colorado Green Building Guild. Use online tools to screen contractors for their knowledge about sustainability.
