The North Broadway Improvements Project is identified as a high priority bicycle system project in the Transportation Master Plan (TMP).

STATUS:   The Project was completed in July 2009.

Visit Cone Zones for the most up-to-date traffic impact information for the North Broadway (Iris to Norwood) Transportation Improvements Project.

Project Purpose:

The purpose of this project is to increase travel safety and access in this corridor by addressing a barrier and safety concern for existing and potential bicyclists.   The project constructed on-street bicycle lanes in both directions on Broadway from Iris to Norwood avenues.

Improvements:

The project completes the missing link between existing Broadway bicycle lanes to the north at Norwood Avenue and to those on Iris Avenue east of Broadway to 28th Street. This important connection also provides a safe and efficient route for north-south bicyclists who travel in either the 9th Street or 13th Street corridors south of Iris Avenue. The electric utility was undergrounded on the west side of Broadway from Meadow to Juniper avenues and some transit stop and landscaping improvements.

Project Budget:

The project budget was $1.6 million. The city received a federal transportation grant in the amount of $600,000 for this project. The city transportation fund provided $1 million in funding for this project.

Public involvement process:

  • Open house meetings were held to inform the public on project alternatives and other information
  • The Transportation Advisory Board (TAB) held a public hearing on Monday, Feb. 13, 2006.  During this hearing, the project team presented the Community Environmental Assessment Process (CEAP) and staff-recommended alternatives (pdf) to the TAB.  The TAB approved the CEAP and the alternatives by a 3 -2 vote.
  • On May 2, 2006, there was a public hearing and City Council consideration of a recommendation on the North Broadway Transportation Improvements Project Community Environmental Assessment Process (CEAP). The City Council voted (7-0) to approve Alternative 5C for the North Broadway Transportation Improvements Project.
