The Boulder Police Department is committed to providing a safe environment for students. The department has five School Resource Officers (SROs) who serve nine schools in the city. The department has had school resource officers for more than 10 years. Each officer in the unit receives training specific to their position in the schools.

An SRO is a law enforcement officer whose primary assignment is within the local schools for the purpose of enforcing laws when applicable; conducting law-related classes and presentations to students, faculty and parents; and counseling or mentoring students.

By working closely with the students, SROs are able to build a rapport with them and are often more approachable and become a resource for questions and advice.
