Missing Sidewalk Links Program

 Missing Sidewalks

A missing sidewalk link is a missing sidewalk segment within the City of Boulder's pedestrian system.

Background on the program:
Construction of missing sidewalk links supports the objectives in the Pedestrian Policy Plan of the Boulder Transportation Master Plan (TMP) by "eliminating breaks and discontinuities in the sidewalk system" and "ensuring adequate connections to public transit."

These objectives are intended to support the TMP's goal of an integrated, multi-modal transportation system. The costs to install a missing sidewalk segment will be covered by the Transportation Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget.

In 2004, transportation staff conducted a public process to prioritize the order of construction of the missing sidewalk links.  The prioritized lists were updated in 2008 to reflect new projects that were added as well as "small projects" that were completed and removed.

Next Steps:
Staff will construct "small projects" (projects that cost less than $75,000) with funding from the city's Pedestrian Facilities budget.  At most, this will result in one small project being constructed per year due to availability of annual funding.  "Large" projects (cost more than $75,000) will be evaluated for possible inclusion into a future CIP with its own project budget.

Prior to constructing a missing sidewalk segment, staff will notify the adjacent property owners, residents, and other interested parties to get their input on the proposed project and design options.
