The Fire Department utilizes the Boulder Regional Fire Training Center, located on three acres of land south of Lee Hill Drive and west of Broadway, for much of its training activities. Constructed in 1974 under a cooperative agreement between the city and Boulder County, the center is operated today under an intergovernmental agreement between the city and the county. The county owns the land, the city built the burn building and tower, and the classrooms are temporary, leased from Boulder Valley School District.

Currently, this is the only fire training center in the county, heavily used by most fire departments in the county. Over the years, surrounding land which was vacant when the fire training center was built has been developed. There are now many new homes in the area some within 200 feet of the burn building. As development moved closer, we modified our training methods to be both good neighbors and more sensitive to the environment.

The facility training props are nearing the end of their service life. Classrooms are limited in size, and storage and restroom facilities are inadequate. Use of the facility has increased dramatically over the years to keep pace with the expanding departments and the increased range of services they provide the citizens.
