Questions and Answers about Jury Duty

Q. Does being a sole caretaker of a young child constitute a valid excuse for exemption from jury duty?

A. No, you may qualify for a postponement but will not be exempted.

Q. How does my name get into the jury pool?

A. The Jury Commissioner of Boulder Municipal Court requests a randomized list from the State Court Administrator's Office for all of Boulder's zip codes. The State Court Administrator compiles its list from voter registration and driver's license information.

Q.Why am I summoned so often and other people have never been summoned?

A. Some individuals seem to receive juror summonses on a regular basis. Different courts are independent of each other and citizens may be called to serve as jurors in each. Residents of the City of Boulder are subject to be called for jury service in the U.S. District Court and the courts of the State’s Twentieth Judicial District as well as to Municipal Court. Citizens are not subject to service in each court more than once each year.

Q. Which court have I been summoned to?

A. You are summoned as a Boulder Municipal Court juror if you have received a white, letter-sized jury summons form.   Click here (5.69 KB) to view a Boulder Municipal jury summons. 

If you have received a red, white and blue jury summons with tear off sides, you need to contact the Boulder County Jury Commissioner at 303-441-4732. 

Q. Do I qualify to be excused from jury duty?

A. Jurors may be excused from service only if they do not meet the minimum qualifications for jury service. Click here to view juror qualifications.

Q. What if I qualify to serve as a juror but I have a scheduling conflict on the day I have been summoned to?

A. You may submit a written request to be postponed from jury service. Please include in your letter the reason for your request, dates when you will be available within the next six months, and a daytime phone number in the event the Jury Commissioner needs to contact you by phone. Q. Do I need to report for jury duty?

A. Call the jury line at 303-441-3883 or click here after 5 p.m. on the day before you have been summoned to report. Court staff will not be able to tell you if you need to report before the jury line is updated.
