Hiring process 2009

View the Boulder Police Department recruiting video.  Becoming a police officer is a multi-stage process.  (Please note:  Since the filming of the recruiting video, the requirements have changed to also allow four years of municipal police experience in lieu of 60 college credit hours.)

Police Officer Selection Process 2009
Projected start date - January 4, 2010

THE RECRUITMENT PERIOD IS NOW CLOSED. AS OF JULY 23, THE DEPARTMENT IS NOT ACCEPTING ANY ADDITIONAL APPLICATIONS FOR THIS HIRING PROCESS.

SUNDAY 08/23/09
PHYSICAL AGILITY AND WRITTEN EXAMS The first day of testing will consist of the following components:
Physical Abilities Test - Applicants are required to complete a series of physical maneuvers. See below for further information.
Written Examination - This exam covers basic math, reading comprehension, grammar and writing ability. If the candidate fails any of the four parts, they will not continue in the process. Personality Traits Assessment - This includes a battery of written tests.

INTERVIEWS
Applicants that pass the first day of testing will return for further testing.

Application Verification Interview - The information provided on the application will be verified for accuracy and completeness.

Oral Board Interview - This is a structured interview. It is both pass/fail and comparative. The results of all of the passing candidates' interviews are subsequently compared and weighed.

Secondary Language Skills - A language assessment is done for those claiming Spanish or a Southeast Asian language skill. These are comparative only.

Word Processor Typing Test - This is a comparative test only. Keyboarding/computer skills are a desired qualification, not a minimum requirement. The desired keyboarding speed is 35 wpm.
Computer Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) - This test gauges a person's truthful responses to a series of questions. *All successful out-of-state applicants will complete the CVSA upon completion of their oral board.. Some of the successful in-state applicants will also complete a CVSA during this time.

CVSA FOR IN-STATE APPLICANTS The remaining successful in-state applicants will complete a CVSA during this week.

09/18/09 - 10/16/09
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS
Thorough backgrounds will be conducted on selected applicants.

11/05/09
CONDITIONAL JOB OFFERS EXTENDED
Selected applicants will be notified of conditional job offers and post conditional job offer testing will be scheduled.

POST CONDITIONAL JOB OFFER TESTING
11/16/09 -11/20/09
Post conditional job offer testing consists of: Medical Examination/Drug Screen - This is a standard physical examination. Psychological Examination - This is a standard written psychological test and interview with a psychologist.

FORMAL JOB OFFERS EXTENDED

START DATE
Those candidates who currently hold state POST certification will enter a training program at the Boulder Police Department.
Those candidates who do not hold a current certification will attend the law enforcement training academy at Adams County.

DESCRIPTION OF PHYSICAL ABILITIES TEST
1. The applicant can lift a 75-pound weight from the floor to a height of 36 inches and return it to the floor.
2. The applicant can lift and carry 105 pounds a distance of 25 feet.
3. Using a 175 pound subject, the applicant can drag the subject on a sheet for 10 feet.
4. The applicant can push a car 10 feet.
5. The applicant can climb 3 flights of stairs in 16 seconds or less. One flight of stairs must be traveled backwards.
6. The applicant can crawl 25 feet in 8 seconds or less.
7. The applicant can scale a 5 foot wall.
8. The applicant can walk 9 feet on a balance beam set 12 inches above the floor.
9. The applicant can climb and descend an 8 foot ladder.
10. The applicant can run 1/3 mile in 3 minutes or less.
The above assessments must be completed while wearing a bullet resistant vest
and a duty belt. These items will be supplied by the department.
