 Restorative Justice Mediation

If you have committed an offense and have been ticketed or fined you will have a court date. At that time the judge may decide to offer the option of Restorative Justice. In Restorative Justice the crime is viewed as a violation of people, interpersonal relationships and the community rather than simply a violation of the law. It involves going into mediation with the victims of the crime and /or those with whom you committed the crime. In the mediation you focus on exploring such questions as:

  • What happened?
  • Was anyone hurt?
  • What apologies need to be said?
  • Did you consider the consequences of your actions?
  • What was the impact on the community, your school, employment, parents or others?
  • How might you behave differently if you were to replay this incident?

Through exploration and problem-solving, the offenders have the opportunity to demonstrate empathy, take responsibility, repair harms and show respect. The purpose is to try to right the wrong. The goal of community justice is to repair the harm that was done. A mediation that is successful in this way results in a written agreement which is reviewed by the prosecution. The attorneys and judge will reevaluate how to handle your case. You must still appear in court unless you are contacted and informed otherwise.
