Safety at the ATM

Here are some safety tips for using Automated Teller Machines.

  • Try to use ATMs during daylight hours.  Have your card in hand and do not approach the machine if you are uneasy about people nearby.  Always watch for suspicious people or activity around the ATM.  If you notice anything strange, leave and go to a different ATM or return some other time.  Even if you have already started a transaction, cancel it and leave.
  • If you must use an ATM after dark:
    • Take a companion, if possible.
    • Park close to the ATM in a well lit area; lock your car.
    • If the lights around the ATM are not working, don't use it.
  • Use your body as a shield while you enter your access code so no one can see you type it.
  • Take all of your transaction receipts with you.  Do not throw them away near the ATM.
  • If you get cash, put it away immediately.  Do not stand at the ATM and count your money.  If there is a discrepancy, you won't be able to take it up with the machine anyway.
  • Never accept offers of assistance with the ATM from strangers.  Ask the bank for help.
  • If you use a drive-up ATM, your vehicle's doors should be locked with all other windows up.
  • Memorize your PIN.  Do not write it down or carry it with you.
  • Never tell your PIN to anyone, including bank employees or the police.
  • Never lend your ATM card to anyone.  Treat it like cash or a credit card.
  • If you lose your ATM card, notify your financial institution immediately.
