Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements Project

The City of Boulder's Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) was last upgraded in 1990.  Since that time, new state requirements have been put in place that must be met by January 2008.  In order for the city to meet these new requirements, new treatment processes and improvements to the WWTP must be constructed.

The improvements will:

• Expand ammonia removal which, in turn, will enhance the water quality in Boulder Creek.  A reduction in the discharge of ammonia will enhance the downstream aquatic environment for plants and animals.  Improved water quality will have a direct impact on any aquatic species that are sensitive to ammonia found downstream of the plant discharge point.
• Increase the treatment capacity from its current 20.5 million gallons a day to 25 million gallons a day.  This will help to address future treatment needs.

Status and Next Steps:

The WWTP Improvements Project is now complete.
