Safe Routes to School

City of Boulder
Call for Proposals for
Infrastructure-related Improvements supporting the
Colorado Safe Routes to School Program

The City of Boulder is actively seeking proposals for Colorado Safe Routes to School infrastructure improvements that meet the following requirements: onbikes

  • Within two miles of a public or private elementary or middle school located within the City of Boulder;
  • Within a City of Boulder public right-of-way;
  • Illustrates an ability to accommodate and increase safe biking and walking access and connectivity along school routes; and
  • Demonstrates a partnership with the school community for which the infrastructure improvement is proposed and the Boulder Valley School District (for public schools) to assume responsibility to promote and evaluate the success of the proposed improvement to be constructed.

Proposals are also required to outline:

  1. A detailed description of the problem at each school that the planned saferoutesorangefinalimprovement will address;
  2. The recommended infrastructure improvement and how it will address the problem;
  3. A baseline estimate of the number of students that walk and bike to school;
  4. Number of students expected to benefit from the planned improvement;
  5. An educational/outreach activity to promote use of the new improvement constructed; and
  6. An evaluation component to measure the success of the improvement in encouraging students to walk and bike to school.

Factors such as existing education and encouragement efforts, enthusiasm of parents and principal support will also be considered. Additionally, proposals that feature a plan to collaborate with the Boulder Valley School District Application for non-infrastructure (education) projects FY 2010 for the education/outreach component (number 5) and an evaluation component (number 6) will be considered more favorably.
