Dushanbe, Tajikistan

 

  • Tajik Youth-Sports Coaches to visit Boulder March 26 to April 2, 2011, Home stays needed

Boulder-Dushanbe Sister Cities in conjunction with American Councils will be hosting a delegation of eight Tajik Youth-Sports Coaches participating in the International Sports Programming Initiative for Tajikistan under the United States States Department.  Coaches will be visiting with local sports groups and training with the International Alliance for Youth Sports during their week in Boulder.  We are looking for Boulder families to offer home stays during the week of March 26 to April 2.   • Free guided tours of the Dushanbe Teahouse
    • First Saturday of the month at 10 a.m. (November through March)
    • First Saturday of the month at  9 a.m. (April through October)
  • The CyberCafe, Boulder's Reciprocal gift to Tajikistan, is now open!  The Dushanbe Sister City will continue efforts to fund additional equipment for the facility, provide training for its operator and provide arts/sculptures for the facility.

 

Host Families needed for Tajik Exchange students

Boulder-Dushanbe Sister Cities is looking for families to host Tajik high school exchange students for the 2010/11 school year.  Boulder hopes to host two Tajik high school students who have won the prestigious US government Future Leaders Exchange Program scholarship.

  • Continues to work with Pueblos Unidos (FCP's local counterpart) in Jalapa.
  • Continues to support the Huertos Familiares (Family Garden) program in Jalapa
  • Efforts to increase local involvement in locally initiated sustainability projects

 

 


 
Kisumu, Kenya:

  • Three humanitarian projects in 2010:
    • Winam Rotary Malaria Netting
    • Khudo School Water and Sanitation
    • Migosi Slum Market Sanitation and Ablution Center
  • Congratulations to the Kisumu Sister City Committee for receiving a Sister Cities International grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as part of the SCI's Africa Urban Poverty Alleviation Program.  The grant will be utilized to support the Khudo and Migosi water sanitation projects!

 

 


 

 Lhasa, Tibet:

Through the Lens: A Photo Documentary of Lhasa, Tibet; Boulder-Lhasa Sister City Project's Humanitarian Achievements - September 2010

  • Delegation to Lhasa in September 2010 allowed the group to meet with several bureaus of Lhasa Municipality to continue development of exchanges for 2011-2012 on the following topics:
    • annual exchanges both ways of school administrators and principals, teachers, and students
    • provision of clinical health care in rural Lhasa Prefecture
    • exchange in Lhasa between American and Tibetan musicians 
    • environmental protection exchange in Lhasa on climate change, garbage disposal, and vehicle emissions
    • science & technology exchange in Lhasa on various uses of solar energy
    • agriculture & animal husbandry exchange in Lhasa on home cooking gas and other needs

Mante, Mexico:

  • Continues to support the Annual medical campaign in conjunction with Boulder Community Hospital.
  • Continues to foster the Boulder-Mante Arts Exchange

 Yateras, Cuba:

Join us in welcoming acclaimed Cuban photographer, Julio Larramendi, and executives from the Office of the Historian of Havana, Ana Lourdes Soto and Magda Resik, for a pictorial presentation and discussion of Cuba’s biodiversity and the rehabilitation and renewal of Havana’s historic center.

Julio Larramendi’s photos illustrate more than 35 books, many having to do with Cuba’s biodiversity and historic architecture. He has exhibited in Cuba and abroad, and has won prizes for his work nationally and internationally.  For more information see www.fotoslarramendi.com 

Magda Resik is a print and radio journalist and writer and is currently the Director of Communications for the Office of the Historian of Havana, the leading force in the preservation and renewal of the historic center of Havana.

Ana Lourdes Soto is the President and Director of Patrimonio, Comunidad  and Medio Ambiente (“Heritage, Community, and the Environment”) a non- governmental organization under the auspices of the Historian of Havana.

The Historian of Havana is the head of Habaguanex S.A, a company whose goal is to make the restoration of Havana's colonial zone profitable and economically sustainable by putting all revenue from tourism and foreign investment back into the city for historic preservation of the buildings, but also for social and environmental programs for the inhabitants. The project of integral development and rehabilitation that he has led in the Historical Centre of Havana since 1967 has been recognized internationally for its strategy of involving the local citizens in the rescue of an enormous patrimony while paying attention to economy, social issues and the environment.

 

  • Continues work with Project C.U.R.E. to ship medical supplies to Guantanamo Province
  • Working with Colorado School of Public Health to provide students opportunities to study public health practices in Cuba.
