Project Purpose:  The project is intended to provide specific improvements related to the mobility management, congestion management, and balanced multi-modal transportation system goals of the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) Transportation Improvements Program.

The purpose of SH 119 and 63rd Street intersection improvements projects is to create a balanced, multi-modal facility that improves automobile, bus, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, mobility, and accessibility to and through the intersection compared to the existing intersection configuration.

Boulder County, the City of Boulder, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), and the Federal Highways Administration (FHWA) are all working together to achieve this project purpose.  Transit related details of the project are being appropriately coordinated with the Regional Transportation District (RTD). 

This project is needed to:

• Reduce motor vehicle congestion caused by peak hour capacity limitations of the existing intersection layout and facilities;
• Improve bus service operations, service efficiency, and transit stop facilities at the site; and
• Improve bicycle and pedestrian efficiencies in terms of route connectivity to and through the SH 119 and 63rd Street intersection, especially as related to safe and convenient bicycle and pedestrian connections to and from the RTD bus transit stops within the project area.
