Center for Campus Fire Safety

Boulder Fire has developed a specific curriculum for college students. Data shows that the university student population is at high risk to fire loss and injury. With the university's cooperation and support, we developed a fire safety partnership. Our goal is to reduce the risk of fire to these citizens (some living independently for the first time).

The program has grown from contacting 120 students and staff in 1998 to training over 3,000 students and staff in fire safety in 2001. Fire safety posters and other materials are also being used by local landlords and property managers to get the word out to this high risk population. This innovative program has garnered national attention from other universities and their fire departments anxious to reduce student fire losses.

Dorm room fire

Mock Student Room Burn Demonstration

Two rooms are built side by side each containing identical furnishings common to student rooms. One room is protected by automatic fire suppression sprinklers. Fires are started simultaneously.

The objective of this demonstration is to show how fast fire spreads, how dark the smoke is and how quickly sprinklers activate to effectively put out fire.

Students are taught the importance of a working smoke alarm for early warning, to always evacuate quickly from their nearest exit and to try to live in sprinklered living spaces.

Student Reactions:

"I learned a lot about preventing fires. I never knew how quickly combustible materials could catch on fire until we saw the dorm room demonstration. It is really important to keep candles, tapestries, and other highly combustible materials out of a room."

"We are really lucky to have fire suppression sprinklers in our apartment."
