Fall 2007 Prescribed Forest Burns

 

 

A prescribed fire is planned for Spring 2008  in the Shannahan 3 Forest Unit on Open Space Mountain Parks lands. 

Objectives of the Prescribed fire are:

  • Decrease stand basal area by 10-15% in all size classes (mostly from indirect mortality and passive torching), this will create natural snags for wildlife habitat and futher open the tree canopy.
  • Reduce litter and duff by 50-70% to enhance shrub and herbaceous cover.
  • Reintroduce fire as a natural forest process to the Shanahan area.
  • Monitor the short and long-term effects of burning on ponderosa pine understory communities.
