Community and City Respond to Hate Motivated Incidents

As recommended by the City of Boulder's Human Relations Commission (HRC) at its June 20, 2005 meeting, the information contained on these Web pages confirms the city’s commitment to promoting goodwill and mutual respect among its various communities and condemns racism, bigotry, harassment and discrimination. This recommendation was developed by the HRC after renewed hate-motivated incidents occurred in Boulder in the late spring, early summer. The city has committed to developing mechanisms that ensure rapid response to these incidents as well as ongoing effective engagement with community groups.

Message from the City Manager

The City of Boulder values all residents and visitors and promotes tolerance and respect within our community. Unfortunately, there have been instances where ethnic intimidation has been perpetrated against members of our community, and this is terribly wrong.

Hateful acts such as the use of racial epithets and physical assaults should make us think about the way we respond to racial intimidation of any kind. We all have a responsibility to challenge even those seemingly harmless or isolated comments before they escalate into serious discriminatory acts.

Discrimination is not what Boulder is about, so let us now stand together for the safety and well-being of our people, the reputation of this great community, and our collective peace of mind. Boulder, as a national leader in civil rights, stands committed to and responsible for opposing acts and practices of discrimination. You can rest assured that we will continue to provide leadership in condemning racism and discrimination directed toward any resident or visitor.

I strongly encourage anyone who witnesses any form of racial intimidation to come forward. Please call the Boulder Police Department at (303) 441-3333 or Boulder County Crimestoppers at (303) 440-STOP. Thank you for your interest and cooperation.
