Safety Around Town

No matter where you are or what you are doing, you can take steps to decrease your risk of becoming a victim of crime.  Follow these basic safety tips:

  • Wherever you are, stay alert and in tune to your surroundings.  Know what is going on around you.
  • Be sure your body language sends the message that you are calm, confident and know where you are going - even if you are not and do not.
  • Trust your instincts.  If something or someone makes you uneasy, avoid the person or leave the area.
  • Know the neighborhoods where you live and work.  Check out the locations of police and fire stations, public telephones, hospitals, and restaurants or stores that are open late.
  • Don't worry about being polite.  If someone threatens you or your space, yell or scream to get the attention of others.
