Transit Oriented Development

Guest speaker Dena Belzer from Berkeley presented examples of successful mixed-use development projects around transit stations.

Dena Belzer:
Dena Belzer, principal of Strategic Economics, specializes in connecting regional economic dynamics, demographic growth trends and real estate development activity to local policy initiatives. Her work combines traditional urban economics and innovative analytical techniques to address growth and development-related issues. Ms. Belzer is an expert on transit-oriented development, fostering mixed-use districts, and local-serving retail attraction strategies. Strategic Economics is also a partner in the Center for Transit Oriented Development and Ms. Belzer directs many of the center's major research initiatives. Ms. Belzer received a Master of City Planning from U.C. Berkeley and a B.A. in Psychology from Pitzer College.

Her publications include Visioning the Future: Strategies for Community Change published by HUD, 1994, (contributing author); Transit Oriented Development: From Rhetoric to Reality, published by the Great American Station Foundation and the Brookings Institution Center on Urban & Metropolitan Policy, June 2002; and Countering Sprawl with Transit Oriented Development, in Issues in Science and Technology, National Academy of Sciences, fall 2002. She is also a contributing author to The New Transit Town, Best Practices in Transit-Oriented Development, published by Island Press in 2004 and led the research team that wrote Hidden Plain Sight: Capturing the Demand for Housing Near Transit, published by the Center for Transit Oriented Development in 2004.
