Muddy Trails are susceptible to damage

Rain and melting snow can cause muddy conditions on many OSMP trails. Visitors are often tempted to travel outside the trail tread to avoid the mud. Resist the temptation! Leaving the trail tread to go around muddy patches causes trails to widen gradually, or "braid" into parallel trails (see photo). This damages the plant life that grows at the trail's edge and causes serious erosion. It also adds to the difficulty and cost of maintaining the OSMP trail system. The damage done by leaving the trail tread may take years to heal. Please avoid using trails when conditions are likely to be muddy. When you come across places where the trail is muddy, stay within the trail tread to minimize damage.
